Reflecting on entrepreneurship education from the perspective of over 40 years of research

Abstract

The aim of the article is to critically assess the maturity of entrepreneurship education as a self-standing research area, considering its history and research gaps, and to identify research trends that are likely to intensify its further development. The article presents a brief historical overview of entrepreneurship education, highlighting its particularities as a research area, including the dynamics of development over the years, followed by an evaluation of its greatest weaknesses and the challenges it faces. Concluding with an analysis of research trends, the article reflects on the maturity of this research area. It shows that despite the existence of a critical perspective, entrepreneurship education is one of the most rapidly growing and promising areas using entrepreneurship scientific output. However, despite over four decades of knowledge advancement in entrepreneurship education and its core learning processes, there remains a need to conduct more comprehensive research to better understand what to teach, how to teach, whom to teach, and for what purpose.

Agnieszka Kurczewska, Uniwersytet Łódzki

Agnieszka Kurczewska, PhD, University of Lodz, Faculty of Economics ad Sociology. She is a researcher in the field of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education. She currently holds the position of Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Sociology at the University of Lodz and is the Vice-Rector responsible for the University’s external relations. She is the President-Elect of the Board of Directors of the European Council for Small Business & Entrepreneurship (ECSB). Her academic experience includes work at Aalto University and research stays at the University of Tampa and Lund University. She has previously undertaken internships at the European Commission and at the Council of Europe. She is also the creator of the regional entrepreneurship competition Eksoc StartUP! and the Academy of Entrepreneurship.
