Entrepreneurial Approach in Development of Good Quality Urban Public Spaces

One of the most crucial, inherent elements of the multidimensional phenomenon of the city is its public space. Well designed and maintained public space with its social, cultural, functional and spatial multi-layered uniqness, can become a kind of marketing city product. The following article considers selected examples reflecting economic aspects of developing urban public spaces and presents selected methods of financing, management and also an entrepreneurial approach to this question on the side of public and private sector, as well as bottom-up local initiatives. The author also presents selected inspiring examples of spatial planning and urban policies supporting public space development that for decades now are being successfully implemented in New York, bringing profits to citizens and the city budget. The following article presents, among others, public-private initiatives and examples of selected realised flagship projects transforming and revitalising city public spaces in Poland based on the European Union funding opportunities. Presented were also selected cases of “bottom-up” initiatives transforming public spaces as being a clear display of creative entrepreneurial attitude of local citizens. With regards to Polish local governments spatial planning strategies, the author highlights the necessity of bridging entrepreneurial approach with deepened knowledge on the complexity of functioning of the contemporary cities and following planning regulations and laws.References
